Project Reflection

For my project, I decided to talk about something that means a lot to the development of my high school years and my character. I have been involved in many different situations in my life so far and some were not very good. I found myself getting in trouble, getting low grades and making decisions that I knew were not me. The main reason for all of this was because of the people that I was hanging out with. I had a lot of friends, many good, but some bad. They influenced me to participate in stupid things because they considered it cool. I found myself drifting away from them because in the end they were not true friends but instead temporary, and damaging. It took a lot for me to realize that these people did not mean anything, for I always thought they were always going to be there for me. Once I made my shift to Hamden Hall, they completely flaked and turned on me. I then knew they were never really my friends. I learned that figuring out who to trust and let influence you is one of life's hardest skills to learn. I learned how truly powerful peer pressure is and how no class or advisor can prepare you enough for it. It is a psychological fact that in our teenage years we spend more time with our friends than with our parents, causing us to worry and care more about what your friends think than your parents. It is sad to think that in a time period where you need guidance the most you shut your parents down because you think you don't need them anymore. Once I realized how important the opinion of my family was, it enabled me to realize what type of characteristics I needed to look for in a good friend. Another thing I learned was to not let other people influence who you are and to always stick to your roots and be yourself. If you spend your time worrying about what other people think, than you have no time to worry about yourself and ask if you are doing the right things. While it is good to make sure people like you and have a good opinion on who you are, you should create that positive judgement by being yourself. One of the worst qualities a person can have is being fake. Fake people are crippled with fear that their real personality is not good enough, and that they cannot be themselves. You need to focus on evolving your true character, and not a fake one. High school is a breeding ground for fake people, so it can hard to dodge and decide which people are right for you. But once you have learned how to do that, you will find yourself in an extremely content place. Knowing that you are involved in a good group of people who bring out the best of you means that you are succeeding in being you, and that should never change.

Where I am with my project

For my final project, I will be discussing the life lesson of choosing the right people to surround yourself with and who to let influence your life. Something that I am doing well is using examples that I have gone through. Using life examples can allow people to relate easier especially with a topic like this. Everything I say holds meaning and is the truth. I repeat many lessons that my parents have taught me and lessons that I have taught myself through experiences. This is something that has affected me and changed who I am so I am passionate about what I'm saying. Something that I need to work on is making the sentences sound less similar. A lot of my sentences kind of go together and I need to add more variety in my style of sentences. I am close to finished with my project but my conclusion needs to be improved. It ends a little short and doesn't have much meaning to it. My project holds a lot of meaning and I feel like my conclusion just doesn't do it justice. Once I figure out my conclusion my project will be finished.

This I Believe First Draft

I believe that people need to care less about what other people think about them, and stop letting them influence your decisions on a day to day life. Your life should be decided by you, and only influenced by people who truly hold permanent meaning in your life. Many people enter your life, and only a very small percent of those people are here to stay. So why would you let something temporary alter who you are? Worrying about what other people think about you results in making terrible decisions that are not who you are. Part of life is deciding who to trust and let influence you. Whether or not you trust your family or not, they are here to stay and should not be taken for granted. I have realized that it is a whole skill to decide who to be influenced by and who not to. I have found myself influenced by people that hold no meaning in my overall life, and have experienced negative results. You often become the people you surround yourself with, and other people see that as well. As much as people admit they don't judge others, they always do. The company you keep can create a good or bad first impression. Nothing is harder than turning down your friends when they want to do something stupid or what they consider cool. You are taught from day one to not give into peer pressure, but it's nothing like the real thing. When the people you consider important give you all the reasons why doing something is good, you believe them, without hesitation. I have learned that if your people know what will hurt you, they won't push you to do it in the first place. With trial and error I have learned how nice it is to meet the right people and fall into place perfectly. If you are smart with you let influence you and let the people who are important influence you, you will be happy and content with where you are.

This I Believe progress:

I am going to write my speech with the outline of everyone should trust in themselves and the people who mean the most to you, rather than people you think are important to you. I am constructing my draft now and have completed the thesis paragraph.

After reading the This I Believe speech samples I got an idea of what generally is written about. I feel that the good aspects of a This I Believe speech is to write honest and not to use too many cliches. Many people tend to fall asleep when listening to someone just write about the typical event that changed their lives or something like that. You should write about something you feel strongly about and not forced. The more strongly you feel about a topic the kore younwill be able to write about it with a passionate tone. Ifnthe topic is forced you often repeat certain ideas to have more substance and it doesnt sound true.

This I Believe Proposal

Highschool for me has not always been the easiest thing thing in the world for me. Freshman through junior year I did not take things seriously and my grades relfected that. Compared to now I didn't do any work and coasted along and didn't really care. But this changed when I transferred to the private school setting. I believe that the enviroment that you are in can alter your perception of everything. I believe that it is important to be surrounded by the right people and resources to help you achieve the highest result. I especially needed a place that would work with me much more closely than CHS ever did. The content of work here is harder but they make it easier to achieve satisfying results. My teachers at CHS were incapable of demonstrating an efficient and understanding form of learning and  I struggled because of that.

Another example of this is being in the right friend environment. One of the most common mistakes teenagers make is picking and trusting the wrong people. Through experience (5 years of high school) I have come to realize that you can only trust a select few people. You cannot be best friends with everyone because that will only end up upsetting you. I believe that with picking the right people and friends that bring the best out of you will result in a happier time growing up. I have experienced picking the wrong group of friends and it was confusing and upsetting but it made me realize what a true friend really is. To conclude if you place yourself in the right environment to thrive work wise and surround yourself with the right people, then you can't lose.

How to play guitar

Teach a Skill Lab

When learning how to play an instrument, it is extremely important to enter with a clear mind. You are not going to get it in one day, it is going to take you tons of practice and effort to learn the ways of an instrument, especially the guitar. When first learning to play the guitar, it is necessary to get down the basics. You need to sit up straight, place the guitar on your right leg and balance it with your arms. Many people hold the pick differently but the best way is to hold it between your thumb, middle finger and pointer finger. You are not going to be able to start soloing and jamming out, you need to master basic chords. With learning chords you will simultaneously learn how to strum the strings and learn the hand eye coordination needed to play. The beauty of playing guitar and really any instrument is that you can always get better and make improvements to your play. With the knowledge of the basic chords, pentatonic scales and the overall neck of the guitar becomes familiar to you and you get to know your guitar. The more you practice and focus the more you improve, but it is important to take breaks and clear your mind, playing guitar is creative not a math problem.

We need change, it is definite. But I want to implement change that the people have say in. Change that the American people believe in and trust. Good morning American people,

When the word 'change' comes to people's minds, there are many responses in which occurs. Some people consider change a very good thing and a sign of evolution and improvement. Others do feel that change can be bad. Change happens every day, the time changes, people change, and very often their mind's change. But that is not what I am here to do. I am not going to stand in front of you all and try and change your mind. Im not going to stand up her and deliver false twisted information just to win over your vote then come my presidential term revert back to my true policies. I am here to be honest with the you and provide you with a trust worthy president who cares about what the people have to say. Yes I want to change this country but in a progressive way with your help. Everyone is never going to be happy, thats just life. But what I want to do is provide the American people an opportunity to be happy. In this day right now, government involvement needs to change. People need to understand that in life success and happiness requires hard work. It is unfair for the families who need Welfare and government support when there are many people who use the system and receive hand outs and never seek a job. That's why I want to implement an evaluation process that weaves out the people who abuse the system, from people who need the system. Many people may feel that this is a hard task but with the right approach and tactics we will be able to track what their current employment is and their current actions in seeking jobs.

Another extremely important topic facing our country is gun rights. While I support the amendment and the American people's right to bear arms, I feel that a deeper and longer background check will allow us to evaluate properly. It would be extremely hypocritical of me to remove guns from the hands of American citizens because I know that if I become president there will be snipers on my roof, and automatic weapons protecting me wherever I go. It is impossible to prevent bad people, there will always be bad people no matter where you are. But by adding a stricter background check, this will allow us to give honest citizens the right to bear arms.

I respect Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton very much. But Hillary has been involved in politics her whole life, while Trump has been a business tycoon his whole life. While their careers have been high ranking and successful, they didn't necessarily start from the bottom. I am a hard working man who knows what it takes to earn. I want America to reflect this.

A large debate in our country is the topic of birth control and abortion. Having experience in the medical field I understand what a joy having a child is, and at times it being life changing in a bad way. Many pregnancies are not planned, and sadly some are forced. That is why I feel that abortion should be legal in the United States. As sad and unfortunate as it can be it should be the women's right to control her body and make her own decisions. They will inherit the burden of taking a childs life because they didn't feel like having it. If a woman chooses to not abort the child but instead put he or she up for adoption, I sill establish safe and providing adoption centers for these children.

Governent spending needs to decrease dramtically. I fully understand that past presidents have increaded the debt and it is extremely hard to overcome, but with smarter spending we will be able to decrease this debt and make improvements. We need more goods made here in America. We need to bring jobs back here to increase small businesses resulting in a better economy. The more jobs on our soul the better. We need to treat our businesses right and allow them to profit and help our economy.

As much as I do not want us to be involved in war, we must have the strongest military in the world. Im not going to hide behind anything, if our country needs to defend itself, then we are going to be able to fight off anyone.  ISIS has caused world wide fear and will soon target countries closer to us if not the United States. They need to be taken out and stopped before they harm anyone else. Our country was founded on love and freedom not hate. There are many people abusing our boarders and coming over illegally and taking kobs. I will increase border control and make aggreements with Mexico on their boarders. It is extrememly unfair to people who have come here legally when there are people coming over easily and starting a life.

There are many things that I plan to do but with your help. I want to make this country the greatest place on Earth and for every man, woman and child living here. I want to unite the parties and work together to get things done. The separation in our political system has been caused by Clinton and Trump along with many other factors. Ronald Reagan united the parties and was our best president we ever had. We need to work together to make our country the greatest and you need a leader like me to get you there.

I feel that the moderator of this debate did a very good job making sure they answer the questions, but I feel that Trump spent a little too much time ranking on Clinton (as much as she deserves it). It just felt like he said her (...) is a 'disaster' a little too much. With that being said, I had to change the channel whenever I saw Hillary break into her fake smile whenever Trump makes a statement towards Hillary. And to me it shows how she knows that he is right and is proving to the American people. Both of them aren't the greatest debaters but last night I feel like there was more info being told about what they're going to do for our country than just verbally spitting at each other from each others podeums.

Debate Analysis

In both debates so far, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have expressed their opinions and argued back and forth. They have shown their opinions on certain topics brought up by the (terrible) moderators. The key to the devate is to convice the American people why they should vote for you. Many people hate Donald Trump and many people hate Hillary Clinton, so these debated are essential to their campaign. An example of a candidate winning is the way Donald Trump handled the second dabate. A secret recording of Trump talking with his buddies on a tour bus was leaked days before the second debate releasing havoc in social media. Trump could have easily freaked out and imploded but he did what he had to do which was fight back. Although many people feel both debates haven't been the most politically informing, this debate was important to Trump to state the video. He apologized for what he said, and then went where many people don't usually go. People were hammering Trump for what he said but he brought into light that Hillary's husband actually did those things and that Hillary ruined those women's lives to protect her husband. He brought up how its not possible for her to be an advocate for women after what she did. I feel this was a really important and smart move that Trump took in the second debate.

t is clear that Hillary does not want to talk about the emails. Donald Trump brought up the emails and she continues to deflect the entire conversation. She ignores the questions and states the same thing how it was a mistake that she lost 33,000 classified emails and risked our safety. This is something that people notice. Trump apologized immediately for the tape released and stated how he is a different man now, Hillary doesn't ever wanna talk about it and the moderators often cut the conversation short whenever it is brought up. She also brings up her "fact checker" alot which is annoying to people listening. Although she may be right it seems like she doesn't know herself but just go to the fact checker on her website. I think that is a blunder because people want to hear that person say the facts not go onto her website. Anyone can download a fact checker and hide behind it.

Donald Trump has also made blunders in his debate. Something that bothers a lot of people is when he interrupts Hillary. Many people find it really rude and unproductive if someone isnt letting the other person speak. In the first debate he interrupted her a lot and it discredits him because people who support Hillary and other people who are on the fence will get mad at Trump, therefor dislike him. It is important to let the other person speak and listen to what theyre saying. Sometimes it seens like Trump isn't the greatest listener and that hurts him.

after watching the debate, there are many things that I took away feom what both the candidates said. To start, Lester did an absolutely terrible job moderating the debate and asked terrible questions. But besides that both candidates showed pros and cons. To start, Hillary Clinton did show good public speaking traits and spoke well due to her not being attacked like Trump was. Trump was constantly on the defense and that didnt help him. But besides Hillarys good speaking techniques, it is hard to listen and trust her due to the fact she is a liar and criminal. Trump has always been aggressive and says as he feels which people find refreshing and new. He is a business man not a corrupt politician. Although many people find him to have interruped her he stated good facts and said the aame things he has been saying. Hillary changes her stance constantly to fit what people want to hear jot to mention she is controlled by her donors. I feel that trump took the win on this debate not because i dont like Hillary but because he seemed a lot more passionate about what he was saying and how he was saying it.

First Speech Reflection

Speaking in fromt a group of people seems easy until you have to do it yourself. Standing in front of the class at a podeum is much different than speaking in a class. I noticed that I did move around a lot and my speaking itself can be much better. It was hard to put it all together without making any mistakes. When theres people in front of you, sometimes the mind goes blank and you dont know what to do.

I want to work on memorizing sentences at a time so i can look at the audience more and plant my feet better so i reduce movement

First Draft of Speech

Whether its a needle to a record, a CD in a radio, or chord out of a phone, any form of music is fine for me along with many people around the world. Before I can even remember music as been a major part of my life. It has always been a way for me to relax or focus which is why I feel music should be used in classrooms and here's why.

Many people associate a certain feeling they get when they hear a song or chord progression they like. There are many genres of music that conjure many moods. A song can literally excite you enough to do something or calm you down enough to sleep. There are many strenuous activities in life (many that are undesired), and music in a specific environment could provide an ambiance that brings the best out of people. While obviously it is a distraction to have music playing during a test or note taking,  walking into a classroom with music playing can result in better behavior and better attitudes from students.

What would you rather walk into, a lively classroom playing music or a boring lifeless room that supports the average attitude a teenage student has towards school. I know that I would be much more likely to be engaged and have a better attitude towards that teacher and school day. Everyone likes music, but not a lot of people like school. The thing is though is that you have to be at school, but you don't have to play music. Playing music plays to a psychological aspect too in the sense that students may realize that if the the teacher is willing to create a good environment, than his/her class will be a fun place to learn. Many students do not pay attention due to boredom and lack of interest. Playing music can result in students being more engaged and interested. A happy class is a better behaved class.

It has been proven that certain genres can increase brain activity, resulting in higher productivity. In an educational era where workload can get extremely large, any form of support can be useful. While everyone has their own way of studying and learning in a classroom, listening to music is just a option that I feel works in many ways, and appeals to many people.

First Three Weeks...

For the past three weeks our class have gone over many topics that deal with introductions, habits while talking, and no and intro into speaking in front of big crowds. one of the first things we did was being conscious of our speaking voice. We introduced ourselves in a normal voice then a louder voice (but without screaming). We highlighted on control of our volume and how to sound loud without being hard to listen to. Next we learned how to talk as if we were being interviewed on live television. We worked on answering questions thoroughly and slowly with the appropriate tone. Next we ventured into getting to notice certain habits that people have when they talk. Whether it is swaying, standing in a weird position, or moving around too much we got a better understanding of what looks good and bad. We then covered TedTalks and the ones we liked and why we liked them. We used them to show good habits and what it looks like to deliver a good speech or pitch. Then we viewed bad TedTalks which showed us the exact opposite. All of these activities has shown me what makes a good public speaker. I think what comes easiest to me is answering questions on the spot and general conversation. I need to work on vocal fry and speaking in patterns sometimes. I want to use my senior speech as a motivation to learn the best way to deliver a speech especially one as important as that. I feel that sometimes I need to work on speaking clearer and a little louder. I feel it is different to speak on command especially in a public speaking class, than to talk normally with your friends. I hope to learn speech delivery for that is what i'm most concerned about.

Bad TedTalk

This TedTalk is very bad because her delivery is extremely annoying. Her weird voice and awkwardness on stage made it very hard to listen. Her slides were outdated and looked like a 90's public television show.

Hello reader, my name is Tsav and I am a student in Public Speaking taught by Mrs. Guarino. I am 18 years old and I live in Cheshire, CT. I am a senior at Cheshire Academy and I will be graduating in the spring. My main sport is baseball, and I play guitar as my main hobby. There are many reasons to take public speaking but there are two main reasons why I am taking it. I want to learn the skills of delivering news to a group of people whether good or bad, and to deliver a speech to a large audience. My future job will involve speaking to families, and it is important to know how and be comfortable speaking in front of people.

When I first heard of public speaking, I immediately knew it was going to be a valuable class because of my major. I am looking to be a nurse practitioner, and possibly be a trauma nurse. With every patient comes nervous, know-it-all family members. They are frantic to hear information from anyone with a hospital staff tag on. Thinking about it I knew that I was going to have to learn how to communicate with people who are scared and desperate for news. Things can quickly get even more out of hand if communication skills are lacking, causing families to get angry at you and even the hospital. Speaking to the families and delivering information is a huge part of trauma and really any type patient care.

Putting my future aside, I began to think about my senior speech. With thought I realized that I had no idea how to deliver an important, serious speech to a large audience. There are so many intricacies and behaviors that can contribute to the audience’s overall perception of the speech. I began to wonder how I look and act when I speak in front of people. I wanted to learn how to avoid certain habits, and adopt good ones. Senior speech is a very important part of my last year of high school I want to me it the best I can.

I feel that everyone should take public speaking because it is an extremely useful skill to learn. Every single job in the world requires communication with other people. When you are talking to someone who has very bad communication habits it is hard to listen, pay attention, and have a conversation with them. People nowadays are so obsessed with their phones and other devices that they are losing the art of talking, making this class even more of a value. There are times when you can speak loosely to your friends and even family, but there are times when you need to demonstrate basic skills of communicating whether it’s with your boss, your teacher, or your work team. Speaking is the main way of communicating and people need to learn how to do so in the correct way.
